Surviving the Age of AI
AI has truly arrived. Technological change is here and there is nothing stopping progress. With the creative destruction of change, some growing pains are happening and people will have to adjust.
What does that mean?
AI means higher structural unemployment and reduced labor force participation. AI means that knowledge workers will be massively more productive. AI means widening inequality. Those who learn to take advantage of this revolution will be among the successful in this brave new world. Those who fail to take advantage will be left behind.
AI is advancing at a fast rate. Soon, AI will do almost everything a junior analyst can do, freeing up time for people to focus on the bigger ideas, using AI for unique insights and analysis. There will always be a human in the loop, but the human will be focused on higher level things. Humans will be the big idea guys, and AI will focus on the details.
Society is changing rapidly. You as a job seeker or seeking clients must contend with the facts. To stay ahead, you truly need to be better. AI is causing us to be more disconnected, resulting in a dead internet - when AI resumes are reviewed by AI resume checkers, personal connection matters all the more. When it is harder to get to the decision maker, you have to use some unorthodox methods to gain clients.
So what do you do?
I can definitely tell you what not to do. Firstly - don’t lose heart. Never lose hope. Even after facing rejection, you have to keep going until you succeed. Don’t give up on finding that new job, pursuing that new client, and following your ambitions for success. You may have to work harder, but it is not impossible to achieve your goals. You have to intelligently and strategically focus on your goals.
Here’s some ideas of what you should do. To succeed in the age of AI, you have to improve yourself. Whether that is pursuing new certifications or getting more qualified, you have to become more useful to other people. The arrival of AI means that you have to up your game. Use AI to your advantage, and increase your productivity. AI isn’t taking your job, but someone who knows how to use AI will take your job. The biggest change is in entry level work. Entry level workers have to think at a higher level. They have to act like owners and produce more valuable insights to stand out. With less entry level opportunities, it becomes crucial for high school and college graduates to find ways to get a foot in the door and seek opportunities more critically.
It becomes more imperative to become more tech savvy. Learning AI tools, prompt engineering, and tools specific to your industry becomes even more important as it is becoming critical to have skill even before you start training in your first job or working with your first client. Technical skill becomes more important, and having system knowledge becomes more useful as AI hallucinations and human error can cause problems for other people - problems that you as an expert can fix. Technical skill makes you more valuable, and if you can communicate that value - you can become more of a success.
Nobody is coming to save you!
Lastly, you have to know that nobody is coming to save you. You must be more self reliant. UBI won’t lead to a utopia, and luxury communism is not happening anytime soon. It will lead to a demoralized, dependent class who will be part of this wider trend of a permanent underclass. All of this is due to incentives. If you accept something for free, you don’t tend to value or preserve it. With more free stuff, people feel entitled to the fruits of other’s labor. With entitlements to others' labor, people focus on taking from others rather than improving their own lives and producing value for others, creating a parasitic relationship and bringing down society altogether if more takers than givers exist.
